Good point Dalai. And great to hear we might have another dot to follow on TD. :)

I just mean I'd prefer to be pottering around Australia than overseas when doddery. I guess you could go supported at that stage but that's less appealing for me. Like the cruise passengers visiting Denali; completely different demographic. I needed a medical escort from the US six months ago after a simple (non-bike) accident and it was awful, even with good insurance.

Just as an aside, maybe to whet an appetite, you may wish to look at Benji Rodgers-Wilsons blog, here about his trip from Melbourne to Norway by bike including Japan, Russia in the winter etc.

He is presently preparing for the next stage, to cross the Atlantic.
Stay fixed. Keeping a cool head.

Yep, you can do a lot with AU$100 a day.

I don't do instagram, but I did have to go searching for rmdub, how else am I supposed to kill the time at work? You are right weg, not helping me very much.

Hehe, sorry. He had a lot of pix from South America not long ago so maybe some ideas for picturesque routes if you come across them somewhere else. Some big climbs, altitude and something of the Asian steppes look about them.

You can camp just behind the pub if things get out of hand. Probably best if you don't ask how I know this.

As most of you know, I have the carbon footprint of southern China at the moment with at least two interstate flights a week and about the only good thing about that is that I end up at home on the weekends. I am normally successful in catching up on a bit of sleep, particularly on the Friday afternoon flight.

This Friday just gone, I was trapped in my window seat by a young American who was way too chatty from the outset and I was beginning to panic about having to be pleasant and social after a long and stupid week at work where I had once again managed to go the entire week without telling someone to get knotted. No small achievement allow me to assure you.

Anyway, just as I was wondering how I managed to have my headphones in the overhead baggage locker, they volunteer that they just flew in from NZ that morning where they had spent the month bicycle touring from north to south along the full tour aotorea route. Ended up having the most fascinating conversation for the entire flight about bicycle and hiking trips had and being planned.

Bicycle touring isn't the worst common ground to have. From stories about juggling the relative freshness of your limited clothing and how much terrible food you can eat when you tour through to some of the magic and unexplainable things that happen to keep you out there in the big wide world.

Looking at this one, from Vienna to Budapest:

Nothing to strenuous, just cruising along the Danube.

Fantastic. Can I ask if that is through a bike tour company and which one? That is heading downstream in that direction yeah? Every bit of gravity helps.

We booked directly with the tour company in the Netherlands, well my brother in law did the booking.
https://www.aktivatours.nl/start/form.reiserequest.php?REICODE=IDOWEBU

Web site is in Dutch only. Cost for 8 days starting at just under €500.

We are riding eastwards, so yes downstream. The Danube ends up in the Black Sea.
Also able to vary the route so we can do more km's per day if we wish.
