When you're ready to buy, start test riding. I found bike shops were very helpful and keen for me to test the products.

It helps heaps.

^+1. It's time-consuming but I'd test ride everything you can get your hands on. One will feel better than the others, through size and geometry. And as others have said, try the unisex (= men's) ones until you get a handle on the frame specs that work for you; while women on average are a different shape and weight distribution we have different proportions individually. Bars, saddle, groupset can all be changed.
