BTW someone needs to figure out how to get massive heavy school bags on bikes. Then a lot more kids would commute by bike.

Tablet PCs will eventually fix that issue I believe.

Daughter's school started a netbook programme this year, but all of the text books are still dead trees. At the netbook information night, a parent asked why the texts were not available electronically, and the response was that the school hadn't even thought about that.

However, I don't think tablet PCs will solve the problem of transporting a saxophone.

Daughter likes her road bike, but would rather die than be seen by her schoolfriends riding it. However, she has said she wants to ride the Moulton to school, because it exudes coolness.

I agree, there are ways of carrying musical instruments on a bike already - I just don't think a tablet will make it easier.

i can't manage my work backpack and my bagpipe box though.... maybe i could just take them out and strap em to my back - i'd look like a cycling octopus...

Wednesdays I have band night straight after work. Can't carry all the junk on the bike so ashamedly say i public transport it those days. I don't want to buy a cargo bike just for my wrapped up octopus....

I mentioned the above 'frog' comment. She said that she's been taking mental notes of riders on her commute, and the numbers of women have really swelled this summer, and beyond. She also said that the majority were on stepthrus or relatively sit upright bikes. And most in 'everyday' clothing. She even took a count on Thursday, because it was so obvious. While waiting at the intersection of the CCT and Lygon Street, she counted 17 cyclists, all bar one were female.

(She took the count because the light sequence there is all stuffed up. Periods of no car traffic have the crossing lights red. When the lights go green to cross, it banks the cars up. They need to connect the crossing with the surrounding major car intersections - she's on the case).
