Preparing for GVBR 2015

Well we have endured magpies, wind and rain, sore legs, sore knees sore other bits. The GVBR is less than 4 weeks away and we still feel a little apprehensive. We both work full time and are managing to do about 80 ks per week on the bikes, is this enough? Do we need to get a couple of big days (100 k) in before the ride. Any tips at all will be greatly appreciated......

I think it would be good to put in a longer one, but soon, as you should then be taking it easy.

Do you feel 'comfortable' on your bikes? The saddle and grips are the two main interfaces, and that's where you'll feel it after longer periods of riding. Many appreciate the ability to have multiple hand positions to mix it up. (Fine if you have drop bars - if not, consider bar ends?)

80 kms a week will give you the basic fitness needed, especially if you have included a few hills, but as Baudman said you need some longer rides on the weekend. Anything over 70 kms should be right. For the long rides on the day, think of them as made up of short 25 km rides with a bit of rest between. On the ride itself make sure you take advantage of the rest and lunch spots which are usually at 25-30 km intervals. It's not a race so take your time. Tom
