comprehensive rider insurance

Postby kevnic » Tue 25 Aug 2015, 6:54 pm

Another discussion we are having at home is regarding the need for Bicycle rider's insurance while on the GVBR. I am of the opinion that if we are involved in an accident on the road the TAC would cover it, we have ambulance cover and private health cover. But I am seeing a bit of a push for bike riders insurance, do you guys have it, do you think it is necessary ?

If you collide with a car/truck etc it will be a TAC accident.
If you collide with another cyclist, it is not a TAC accident.
If you have a single bike accident, no TAC.

I hope you never need to make a claim on cycling insurance, but if you are injured, the costs mount up - even after claiming from private health insurance.

(Our family chooses to be BNV members for insurance cover).

Both BN and CA membership carry some insurance 24/7. But I had a feeling that there was some coverage to event participants (not sure what for) but I don't see it in the t&cs. Might be worth giving them a call or going through the details carefully, depending on what coverage you want beyond what JAC has outlined.

I thought rider insurance was included on an event like Great Vic - but like weg - I looked in the terms and conditions and can't see it.
The following organizations are ones that I know of that offer rider insurance. The policies and prices differ, you'd need to do some research to estimate which might give you more suitable cover.

Cycle http://www.cycle.org.au has membership that includes insurance from $155 for "Alloy membership"
Cycling Victoria http://www.cycling.org.au offers membership to a club, and a "recreational licence" that includes insurance. The price varies a bit depending on which club you join, but around $100.
Bicycle Network http://www.bicyclenetwork.com.au has membership that includes insurance - $122 per person, a family of 2 for $153.
