Pay a deposit

I found a bike online and called the local store with a view to buying. They told me that they didn't have the bike
in that outlet of the chain that it could be in any of their shops around the country and could get in within a week for a test ride.
They also said that I had to pay a 20% deposit for them to get it in and I would get the deposit back if I didn't want the bike.
It seems a bit strange to me that they want a deposit has anyone encountered this before or have any thoughts?

If it's a model/size they're unlikely to have a buyer for, then yeah, it's not uncommon.

It means you're far more likely to come back and give it a test-ride. And yeah, if it doesn't suit, then you get your money back.

start with bike exchange, price, range, components - bike shops that sell model, then online reviews, including youtube, then shop like ivanhoe cycles (big range). or like.

Test ride as many as you can - hone in on what your requirements are.
