Today I noticed a few flashing neon signs advising that Mt Dandenong Tourist road will be closed 8-9 October. Can't find anything on the VicRoads website to say exactly where.

I'm guessing it's Ferntree Gully end. My suspicion is that it's between Sherbrooke Road & The Crescent but I can't find anything on the VicRoads website to confirm that. Lots of those portable flashing neon signs up all around the general area but they just say "Mt Dandy Tourist Road closed 8-9 October" without specifying exactly where.

not as busy as i thought it would be in the Dandenongs today. saw a group zing down perrans ck rd. seemed to be quicker than the average punter, possibly a race team.
anyway did an 18.51 up the 1in20, 20 secs slower than 3 weeks ago. maybe the warmer weather or just lack of want to go into the hurt zone.

Haven't been to the 1:20 today but driving around other roads in the hills there is a lot of gravel washed onto all the roads from last night's big downpour. Be careful.

Wow.

I wonder if the guy complaining in the comments that 'this is not news' is the same one flagging it on Strava ;)

The downhill version should be banned. Didn't a guy die there after he hit a car reversing out one of those driveways on the left near the bottom?

I don't recall any cyclists dying on the 1 in 20 but not saying it hasn't happened. A couple of years ago, a cyclist died on the descent to Montrose a couple of corners down from Kalorama oval in similar circumstances that you described. A cyclist was killed at The Basin a few years ago but that was further down at Millers Rd roundabout.

Banning the entire 1 in 20 downhill segment might be going a little overboard. I think the segment should end at the bus turn around point though.

Agreed, once you get to the houses then its over.

And, of course, it cannot be "banned". I just don't know why anyone would want to try for a best time (I refuse to call it a KOM) - just too friggin dangerous.

I love that descent - done it 100s of times and never had a problem, except with some gravel washed across some spots after rain.

One of the safest downhill stretches around, I think.

I watched a guy fly past me going down the 1:20, only to misjudge a corner and end up in an embankment. :o
