Melbourne Graffiti Ride

Postby Canuck » Tue 19 Aug 2014, 6:15 pm

Or street art, to be more specific - not interested in tags and vandalism.

Image

Date: Sunday, 21st September 2014 (with possible add-ons if necessary or desirable)
Time: meet at 9am, finish by 12pmish for food, drinks, etc if people want - otherwise, drop off as you like - exact start / finish to be determined as route is set, but think inner Melbourne
What: Graffiti Ride - see below, and start thinking about a site you would like to share with the group

This idea was born here: https://www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/forums/viewtopic.php?p=653599#p653599

The concept is to get together for a ride to visit and share the sites we appreciate - check out the buildings, lane ways, fences, and such which have become a canvas on the city. Appreciate some creativity and talent, whilst having a relaxing social ride. Possibly even share insight or info we are privy to in relation to what we visit and view.

The tricky part is designing the route in relation to what people want to share, so depending on numbers and locations, we may need more than one ride....

If interested, add your name to the list. If you have a specific site you want us to visit, add the suburb/street of your intended art. That way, we can work out a route; I'll limit it at a certain point if there's too many, or split it into separate days.

It is highly likely I'm overlooking something obvious - work is hectic lately, cognitive load is reaching epic proportions - so shout out if you've got something helpful to add.

The List

Canuck (still thinking about my intended site...)

Sanity. It's overrated.

Awww carp. I would love to do this ride. It could end up being like a mini-roubaix, with much more to see.
But I’ll be away at the time in some over-civilised country where they don’t even have graffiti :(

Definitely interested. Sounds like great fun! Will have to confirm closer to the date though. What's the distance/terrain/speed looking like? I was thinking I might see whether my mother wants to do it too, but she isn't in 'peak' cycling form at the moment. :P

Great picture, Baudman! I'm thinking this might be more of a 'hop on bike, ride 10 metres down the lane, see a piece of cool graffiti, hop off and take photos. Rinse and repeat.'

There's certainly a lot to be seen in the city. Hosier Lane, of course, but quite a few other places.

Potential route from Hosier...
Manchester Ln
Union Ln
Tattersall's Ln
Off Little LaTrobe b/t Swanston and Elizabeth
Off A'Beckett west of Elizabeth

But then just outside of the city, I know quote a few places in the inner-north and/or inner-west, depending upon how far we wanted to roll.

Just picking up a few ideas from the other thread, and bauds' Hosier Lane:

Ideas
80 Collins St
Hosier Lane, city
AC/DC Lane, city
Bees, MYT near Bridge Road (?)
Rhino in Richmond; Bridge Road?
Rats (?), Napier St, Fitzroy (don't have the number)

I can confirm that as of this morning the rhino on Bridge Road, Richmond is still there in all its glory. It is located on the corner of Bridge Road and Hunter Streets on the outbound wall of the cafe there.

The other one I can think of is the new football mural on the Swan Street side of Richmond Station that was in the news. http://media.smh.com.au/news/national-t ... 60261.html

There is also Botherambo Street, Richmond, although not sure the quality of those drawings is really up there with the best:

Also I think around the back of Richmond Station may have more stuff: http://www.danielbowen.com/2012/01/04/s ... hmond-stn/ although that blog was done in 2012.

As well as the whale (not sure if it is still there): http://yarracityarts.com.au/work/richmo ... ale-mural/

Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_art_in_Melbourne

Makatron's work on his official page: http://www.makatron.com/category/outdoor/ shows a chameleon in Brunswick, a dead fish in Smith Street, Collingwood (http://fireandtea.com/blog/2014/5/13/th ... et-is-dead) and more although I haven't seen them personally so don't know if they are still there.

Summernight - if you're coming, maybe choose one or two specific sites you really like and want to share, and we'll use that.

As weg and others have noted, lots in city laneways; I would suggest we meet at Fed Square, and do the city stuff anyone wants to share first - 9am is early enough on a Sunday morning to not be caught up in too much hectic traffic. Then we can work out to further things as they are indicated.

At this point, I'm thinking I want to share a site in Fitzroy. But if someone wants to take us to the Bees mentioned, I'd really like to see them :)

No problems. I'd say Richmond Station (both sides), Botherambo St and the Rhino as they're all fairly close together in terms of distance.

I don't know where the bees warehouse is.
