Ride the Night 2015 - 1 Feb 2015

Postby Snuffy » Wed 06 Aug 2014, 8:42 am

Apparently BN's been up to something new....

http://ridethenight.org.au/

From the website

WHEN: Midnight, February 1 2015
WHERE: Approximately 70KM covering the best of Melbourne, starting at Alexandra Gardens & finishing with dawn brekkie at another iconic Melbourne location
WHY: For fun, fitness & to break the cycle of youth drug addiction

From the email.....

We want to let you in on a little secret: we're about to add a brand new event to the calendar. Ride the Night will be the first organised, mass participation night-time bike event held in Australia and, as a member of Bicycle Network, you'll have the opportunity to sign up first!

In the weeks to come, we'll be sharing all the important info. But here's what we can tell you right now: Ride the Night, an event run jointly by Bicycle Network, FebFast and Youth Support + Advocacy Service, will...

Reclaim Melbourne's streets, with a 75km night ride for you and your mates
Start on St Kilda Rd (opposite the Arts Centre) at midnight on Feb 1, 2015
Take in the best locations Melbourne has to offer...the MCG, Shrine of Remembrance, CBD, Zoo, Yarra, the Bay, Docklands and more.
Finish with a dawn brekkie on Albert Park lake
Stage a series of "festival" stops along the way, allowing you to catch your breath and enjoy DJs, light shows and other great entertainment
Raise money for a local charity to help break the cycle of youth addiction
Ride over the West Gate Bridge. Yep, straight over the top of it!

Excited yet? We are!

We'll be taking "members only" registrations from 9am, Wednesday 20-August, so add it to your diary along with February 1, 2015. In the meantime, watch this space for more announcements to be released soon...

It does seem rather long in timing... perhaps there will be stops/breaks at the 'iconic locations' which will take up some time for socialising and information? guess you'll have to wait and see....

I like the idea, though.

Soooo the Capital City Trail is ~29km and takes in most of those locations (roughly).

Assuming it follows a loop around the city like that, I wonder what they're going to do to make up the difference. The Westgate isn't going to add that much to it.

This is an interesting idea. Especially when you think of the breakfast at the lake as an opportunity to make an early start on a ride to Point Nepean & return

Adding another layer of "novelty" to the "novelty recreational bicycle riding events" core business function of BN.

Yes, I think a big all-night bike ride sounds fun.
No, I don't think it's something that our peak national [1] cyclist advocacy and lobbying organisation should be organising.

[1] Now they've dropped the "V" and made a presence in Sydney, their ambitions are unambiguous. They want to swallow or displace the other state bicycle orgs.

Yes, the email also piped my interest.
Of course it will depend on how much $$ BN intend to persuade me to part with for the privileged of being part of such a mass participation ride.

Emphasis added.

I didn't know that, but am not surprised. My footnote was only justifying my choice to call them the peak "national" group. Your information strengthens to my case.

The email said there would be DJs etc. at certain points, so presumably you ride the few kms, hop off, rave for an hour, hop back on, go to the next point etc. etc.

I'm assuming alcohol won't be being served? :P Might be a hairy a ride if it is. :P

Not many bike lights last for 6 hours
So everyone will need those Glowcandy lights
Or multiple back-up lights

Feb 1st is a Sunday morning - at those times the most intresting of nocturnal animals will be out in force in places like St Kilda & the CBD...
I wonder what type of lighting is specificed? Just to be seen by, good enough?

Not an orginal idea though, is it Grinders?
Just a bike & a place to ride.
